LETTERS OF SUPPORT
Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution

Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution

Date: May 20, 2002

AEOBiH Sarajevo

Subject: Letter of Support

Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR) is familiar with the AEOBiH education activities since the CICR took part in it. Professionalism, program planning, responsibility in the work and very high level of awareness of continuous professional development in order to conduct duties and obligations of the election officials in the best way also facilitated our work as a partner. Since the first meeting in September 2000, CICR and AEOBiH have established cooperation, which could serve as a good example to others. Fair relationship, common interest, respect of needs, and understanding of very complicated programs resulted in the fact that everything became easy in the work between AEOBiH and CICR.

CICR has been conducting Conflict Resolution Trainings for the AEOBiH members. One of the important aims of this training is professional development of the AEOBiH members for transferring basic knowledge and the conflict resolution skills to a great number of the Association members as well as development of neutrality and impartiality of the election officials in the election process. The training has been conducted in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada, and in spite of very comprehensive training program, AEOBiH members succeeded to use their free time to acquire knowledge about the Canadian election system. Their visit, knowledge about the subject, professionalism and readiness to help their country to establish and implement democratic elections impressed all interlocutors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa is especially impressed by the AEOBiH delegation, which has been demonstrated in several recent visits by the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution.

They are always looking forward to hearing new information about the AEOBiH.

AEOBiH is one of very few organizations in BiH who have realized importance of investment in the training of their members. In that way they are not only providing knowledge necessary for conduct of their regular obligations and tasks, but also creating fruitful basis for professional cooperation of members from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is very important to point out significance of independent Association of Election Officials in the election process, democratization of the election system and their role in proposing and adopting election laws. The role, which could be played by the Association and every individual member of the Association through their work, education and respect in his/her working environment, is extremely important for restoring trust of citizens in regularity of the elections. The Association is not politically oriented, and most people consider it as neutral non-governmental organization, which is very important for democratization of the society.

Taking into consideration importance of work you are doing and the role that only your Association is able to play in the election process in the country with complicated political reality as it is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we are sure that you will overcome this problem very soon.

Sincerely,

Vesna-Dasoviæ Markoviæ
Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution
Country Program Director, Bosnia and Herzegovina
