PRESS RELEASE (Sarajevo, 15-May-2006)

 

Learning and Knowing - Means Existing


Group of 40 students will be in Sarajevo, hotel “Saray”, from May 16 to May 20, 2006, in organization of the Association of Election Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AEOBiH) within the project “Learning and knowing – means existing”, which is implemented in cooperation with 10 secondary schools throughout BiH thanks to the funds of the Office of Public Affairs at the Embassy of USA in BiH (OPA).

20 male students and 20 female students of the third classes from ten secondary schools, five from RS (Ribnik, Šipovo, Rudo, Kasindo and Kneževo) and five from FBIH (Vareš, Maglaj, Breza, Bugojno and Ljubuški) will in that period listen to interesting lectures on the following topics: Political system of BiH, Elections in BiH, Human Rights and Freedoms, Democratization of relationships in school/Strengthening of capacities of students' councils in schools, Getting closer to European Union, Mid-term Development Strategy – fight against poverty and millennium aims, Gender equality, importance of the Law on freedom to access of information.

Besides that, visits to all levels of the government are organized (municipality Stari grad Sarajevo, Canton Sarajevo, Parliament of the Federation and Parliament of BiH), in order to better understand levels of authorities in BiH and its functioning. Tourist sightseeing tour will be also organized during their stay in Sarajevo.

The purpose of the project is that young persons who turn to be 18 and acquire voting right become aware of the fact that they are the ones on whom dynamics and type of changes happening in BiH depends on.

Afterwards, when they go back to their original municipalities, they will be obliged to pass their acquired knowledge to their colleagues and to promote importance of going out to vote at the elections among young people.
