PRESS RELEASE No 06/2001 (Sarajevo, August 27, 2001)

USAID SUPPORTS AEOBiH ACTIVITIES

"Six years after signing of the BiH Peace Agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina finally has its Election Law in place. As a visa for entrance into Council of Europe, Election Law was passed with help from the international community, persistence of deputies in the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, and thanks to patience of BiH citizens. Association of Election Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AEOBiH) has its place and significance in the process of Election Law implementation as it gathers 720 members - election officials from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina with competence and experience in election process. In contacts with the BiH Election Commission we will offer our partnership and cooperation in the process of election organization and implementation" - this was one of the conclusions from the meeting of AEOBiH Presidency, Legal Council, Media Group, and IFES/AEOBIH Secretariat which took place in Neum from 24-26 August 2001.

"USAID Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina supports the work of AEOBiH and plans to do so in the future as well" - Mr. Eduard Kadunc, Director of USAID Mission in BiH, pointed out during presentation of past and forthcoming AEOBiH activities. He added: "This Association should act as a partner of BiH authorities and Election Commission in education about election process. AEOBiH has competent and impartial members who can provide all relevant information and education on all segments of Election Law to BiH citizens, political parties, and non-governmental organizations."

Meeting in Neum was organized with very good timing if we consider the recently adopted BiH Election Law. AEOBiH work should be covered and supported by the media as well and that is why the Media Group prepared a comprehensive strategy for promotion of AEOBiH. Since its inception in 1999, AEOBIH has implemented numerous projects related to election process but the coverage about these activities in the media has been rather scant. A more aggressive promotion of Association will aim at familiarizing the public with AEOBiH activities and motivating citizens to take more active participation in democratization of election process.
